More spring signs across the city as blossom appears here and there, and a general spread of buds on the wisteria and lilac has appeared around the outside of the house, which is very welcome. Also with the seasonal change comes the occasional flurry of lost-looking tourists squinting at their phone-maps and trying to figure out where the hell they are. All as it should be really,

Last Sunday @EastVanHalen was in the chair, spinning soulful Egyptian sounds in the shape of Al Massrieen's "Modern Music", a compilation of 70s & 80s tracks put out in 2017 by the esteemed Habibi Funk label, which got everyone grooving most effectively, I'd say. Many thanks to Steph for the pick and for sailing the frisb across to, me @kleptones, so it's time to go all italic for tonight's intro...

"...right then.

I deliberately left tonight's pick to the last minute, as I knew we were heading out to see Underworld last night, which would definitely influence what I wanted to pick tonight. And so, unsurprisingly after having had my senses seriously pummeled for a few hours, tonight's pick is a somewhat gentler contrast to help soothe those jangled senses, and the inevitable hangover, natch.

I'm surprised I've never picked this artist before (had to go and check the list to be sure) as their music has been a regular listen ever since I first discovered them over 15 years ago, but there you go.

I think also this is the first time someone has picked a solo instrumental album for #LC, but I'll probably be proved wrong by someone. I'm sure there are similar musicians dotted around the world (you may know of one or two), but in this instance the discovery happened to be a reasonably local person (from Hastings, not far from my old home in Brighton), which allowed me the opportunity to see them perform close-to-home several times in appropriately intimate environments.

As usual I'm reluctant to say much more, other than to warn that this is a rather deep and spacious listen, so feel free to get comfortable in advance - you may even nod off, which is fine - I'm really not expecting the hashtag chat to be super lively either, although as always, you never know..

The album dates from 2007, but it's a little short, so I've attached a bonus track from their following album at the end, partially to extend the mood, and partially because the track in question is really beautiful, so consider it a pre-attched after-party tune.

Hope you enjoy!"

Okidoke, download's here, stream's below:

Listen to The Listening Club - 15th March 2024 byThe Listening Club Volume 2 on hearthis.at

See you at 20:00 GMT tonight!

Eric Kleptonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13279366242949275787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830631732611553025.post-13059628987947196292024-03-10T11:31:00.000-07:002024-03-10T11:31:22.649-07:00The Listening Club - 10th March 2024
Hey folks,

Hope you're doing good. Back in Amsterdam after a spontaneous soujourn to Prague last weekend, where the local beer and wine continues to flow deliciously and the sausages, goulash and dumplings do a grand job of soaking it all up. Back in Amsterdam there are plenty signs of an early spring, as buds and blossom appear around the neighbourhood, and the sun pokes its head out for the first time in god-knows-how-long, which is all very well and good, it must be said.

Whilst we were returning from the above, last Sunday @woj was in the chair, rocking and a souling with his pick of Barrence Whitfield & The Savages "Glory", which seemed to go down pretty damn well. Thanks to Woj for the pick, and for sailing the frisb over to @EastVanHalen, who's here with tonight's intro...

"I’ve been feeling weirdly stuck lately - busy with good work, grateful for friends and family, but treading water elsewhere. After many years of activism I’ve become used to fighting through hard situations and hard times, but the past few years have been heavy with many things, not least with the awareness that a lot of the 'good guys' - and the parts of activism that circle hungrily around power - aren’t so good at all.

So it was happy luck to come across a comrade’s writing about his own feelings of being stuck, and about how he’s been finding his way back to hope. “[This artist] tells us, that even though things are really hard, seem hopeless, and you don’t see a way forward—the sun rises in the morning and calls to us: 'Ebda’ Men Gedid!' (Start from the Beginning!)" This comrade is from Egypt, the songs are in Arabic, I knew nothing about this artist, but it’s been cool to start exploring. And it has me thinking about what starting from the beginning looks like in my own traditions.

In case you’re interested, here’s the blog post that got me (and us) here (spoiler alert!)"

Right then, download's here, stream's below:

Listen to The Listening Club - 10th March 2024 byThe Listening Club Volume 2 on hearthis.at

See you 20:00 GMT, watch out for daylight-saving changes in other time zones!

Eric Kleptonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13279366242949275787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830631732611553025.post-26709644581065086752024-03-03T02:14:00.000-08:002024-03-03T02:14:27.102-08:00The Listening Club - 3rd March 2024
Hey folks,

Hope you're all doing fine. Whizzing this out a few days in advance as we're heading off to the land of fine beer for a weekend away, so let's get on with it...

Last Sunday we entertained alternate timelines in fine style with the #NeverEverVortex, a random, but somehow interconnected selection of tunes, the likes of which we will never see again, we hope. Many thanks to all who chipped in, and double plus thanks to @akx for the assembly work. Back in regular #LC-land, we find @woj holding the frisb, with this to say by way of introduction to their pick...

"A couple weeks ago now, we lost the great Dexter Romweber. Probably most well-known as a co-founder of the Flat Duo Jets, he also had a pretty storied career as a sideman for many big names and then with his sister Sara in the Dex Romweber Duo. His command of the stage, his presence, and his antics were legendary and, by all reports, way larger than life. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to see them - the Flat Duo Jets due to constraints of time and space and the Duo because I foolishly passed on the times he and his sister played in town thinking there would always be a next time. Alas.

While ruminating about Dex, I got to thinking about other larger-than-life stage presences which naturally lead to this week's artist. He's also a maniac behind the mic and takes complete control of the audience with his powerful, soulful voice and his utter commitment to the performance. I have seen him and his band -- in the same small room that Dex and Sara would frequent here in New Haven in fact -- and his performances are not to be missed. Fortunately, most of that comes through on the studio albums...so here's his most recent release from last year. Turn it up and boogie woogie!"

Right then. And apart from needing to go out and do some errands in a few… this is very much my kind of weather (not only happy when it rains, I promise). Poor birds, though! They were just getting accustomed to the sun & relative warmth and now everything’s covered in wet, heavy snow.

Big thanks to each of you who sent in such excellent tunes. Was an honor and a pleasure to sort and stich.

Just before our Camus vortex, @iamwahl had flipped that ol’ frisbee to @Erimichkea, and here she is now with her intro to tonight’s selection:

"I hadn’t listened to this full album in a few years, and I found it again while searching for something to contribute to last week’s vortex playlist. The title of the first track would have fit the theme nicely, but after listening to the whole album again, I decided to save it for my selection this week. It’s a music genre that I don’t listen to a lot, but I’ve always enjoyed the singer’s vocals. The band has several other albums before and after this one, but this is the one I keep coming back to."

Alrighty then. There was a break in their career and, I must confess, I lost contact with them when there was nothing forthcoming for many years. Partly as a result of this, I didn’t discover this album until well after its initial release (yes, it was another thrift-store find), which in turn was more than a decade after the most recent of this artist’s recordings that I had originally fallen in love with. This may not be the most recognizable of this performer’s output (although in some locations it may be) but it is representative of the breadth of their creativity and articulate voice. This is personal. There is an angry bite here, that delivers a mouthful of sweetness. As Emma Goldman said, "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution”—come on down to the barricades, raise your fist, and swivel those hips….

As it is (for some) #DryJanuary I’ll leave #DrinkingClub up to each participant’s whims…

Right then, download's here, stream's below:

Major thanks to @EmmaPrice & @Saucer who have offered to take over management here whilst we're away - never know though, we might be tuning in from a distance if we get a chance, will have to wait and see... either way, see you in a month or so!

Last Sunday, we marked the changing of the years in customary #LC style with the 2023 #FestiveVortex, 33 slices of super-varied sounds, the mixing of which always causes no end of furrowed brows for me, so thanks for the post-playback props, it's always very much appreciated!

Looking back into '23, we see the aforementioned @EmmaPrice was left holding the frisbee, so over to her for the first #LC intro of '24...

"Evening all, hope 2024 is treating you well so far.

You know when you start getting to know someone better and realise you've found a musical sibling who reacts in the same way you do to the music that's within your soul. Someone who reminds you why you love a certain track or the way someone makes a guitar sing. It opens the door to the very heart of who you are and what's important in your world. I've had that experience recently and it's intoxicatingly glorious. My first gig with this person was this artist in an intimate London venue late last year and it was one of my gigs of the year. I've not done the final tally yet but my band count for last year is 150+ so you can understand why I'm so excited to share tonight's artist with you.

When the frisbaton landed I instantly knew I was picking this album. Once I'd recovered from going to bed at 10am on the final day I started listening to this artists work and was immediately hooked. This album came out in October and has been on pretty constant rotation for me since. Been a gentle time here in Amsterdam, eating, drinking and conversing as befits the season - not much partying, but we're saving that for later this month when we vacate the premises for a few weeks (from Sun 21st Jan for 4 Sundays!) . Thanks to those of you who have offered services to keep this ship running in my absence - I will be in touch on M-don in the next few days to discuss the details - and still open to more offers of help if you're so incluned, please let me know.

Way back in time, we saw @Woj on frisbee duty, playing his traditional end-of-year game of "I wonder what that's like?! with "Data" by Tainy, which definitely got the assembled bopping in an early-xmas-party-where's-the-punch sort of way. Thanks extended for the pick and for sailing the frisb over to @EmmaPrice, who has had a serious amount of time to consider her pick, and still a week more to go, because...

...Yeah, it's that time again, when the best new sounds that passed through your ears in the preceding year gather together in one place to duke it out, it's the 2023 Festive Vortex - This year a bumper crop of 33 selections, from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again, encased in just over two hours of playtime (looks like we're going to have to restrict submissions a bit in future, eh?, especially if folks insist on picking such long tunes, hemhem!).

Anyway, much like 2023 itself, it is what is was, so download here, stream below:

Listen to The Listening Club - 7th January 2024 : Festive Vortex! byThe Listening Club Volume 2 on hearthis.at

See you at 20:00 GMT Tonight. Que sera. Looking forward to a gentle and relaxed holday period, and wishing the same for y'all wherever you are and whatever you're up to, peace be with you all.

Of course, post-holidays it will be time for the 2023 #festivevortex, so it's time for you to pluck a couple of this year's finest sounds according to your ears and throw them into the pot. We return here on Sunday 7th January for playback and new years resolutions! (Also advance notice that I'm going to be away for a whole frickin' month in Jan/Feb, so will be needing managerial help here from 21st January onwards - can you help? Thanks to Corin for the pick and for bouncing the frisb off my shoulder across to @woj, who's here with the last pick of the year...

As is my tradition, if the frisbee flits its way to me in December or January, I like to peruse the year-end best albums lists, select a highly ranked album by someone I've never heard, and - for good or for ill - listen to it for the first time with all of you. This Sunday is no different. There were a few albums I was eyeing whose descriptions looked particularly interesting but ultimately decided to go with this one since it's from a genre I know next to nothing about and almost never listen to: reggaeton! And that is pretty much the only bit of information I have to share about this album.

Also as is my tradition, I will be driving back from the airport when the appointed time of gathering rolls around but should be back home when the album ends. Bit of a non-week here as the cold I picked up last week at The Prodigy gig decided to develop into a particularly unpleasant strain of Flu, which has wiped me out all week and now @nessiest too (sharing is caring, sorry my dear!). Won't be going out in it either way, as, following a fine Wednesday evening catching up with old friends, drinking a few beers and watching The Prodigy, I've come down with a classic post-gig cold (ah-fuckin-choo). Another soggy week in Amsterdam, although as wind is now coming from the north, temps are finally dropping and a ton of leaves are readying themselves to fall overnight in that "suddenly it became winter" mode that the Netherlands does so well (prediction: next Thursday). Meanwhile we dodge the drops and scurry out to cheer ourselves after a thoroughly depressing Dutch election result by consuming the nearby Meredith Monk retrospective exhibition in the Oudekerk (ace), visiting the nearest toko to stock up on noodles & snacks and sinking a couple of delicious dark Autumn beers in a welcoming nearby bar. Hope you’re all doing great!

Out here in Boulder it’s a lovely, chilly Fall day. The bears are starting to think about finding cozy places to hibernate… but for now they’re still seeking out and cramming in as many snacks as they can find (aka my typical modus operandi) to get ready for their winter sleep.

Last Sunday in LC land, @EastVanHalen and her kitten Gracie treated the assembled to a weirdo nostalgia album as she described it, namely the lo-fi Alien Lanes by Dayton Ohio 4th-grade teacher Robert Pollard and his Guided By Voices merry makers. I’ve been a longtime fan of the band but had never heard that particular album, and very much enjoyed its waggishness along with you all.

This evening we welcome the frisbo-clutching @SimonLandmine onto the stage… Let’s hear what he has in store for us…

“As usual, I was suffering considerable indecision looking at my increasingly-misnamed shortlist, and nearly picked a completely different album (partly due to recently watching a short YouTube video about how it fitted into the band's oeuvre). That one might still show up another time. However, I then thought of this one, and on listening through, realised I was more in the mood for it. Hope that you all are, too.

“Some of you may know this one, and others might recognise the voices. This album came about because of a loss, but gave those involved a way to process their grief, and ended up becoming rather well renowned for the combination of artists - two of whom were already known for the band that they were in, although would go on to greater fame, and the rest of the lineup, with the guest vocalist, would soon become a new band in their own right, who also made quite the impact a little later with an award-winning multi-platinum album. Notably, the single from this album was the first recorded release to feature vocals by that as-yet-unknown guest vocalist.

“This one got good reviews, but failed to chart ... until a year later, when the artists involved had got considerable mainstream attention, and the record company realised what they had with this, and re-released it and pushed the single and video, since when this album has also gone platinum.

“Hope that you enjoy it - it's a favourite of mine when I'm in the right mood, although obviously not as unknown as some pickaas for LC. No bloody clue what the #DrinkingClub suggestion would be, though, but it should possibly be wrapped in a paper bag while being drunk on a bench.”

Alrighty then! November already? Jeebs. Still mostly pouring down here, which, combined with some still-higher-temperatures-than-usual is making the surroundings seem pretty damn green and soggy, like overdone spinach. Still, hoping for a few gaps in the downpours to allow us to scoot dryly from venue to venue during Le Guess Who next weekend, we shall see. Thanks to everyone who chipped in a tune or two, and double plus thanks to @akx for splicing and dicing the results.

Back to regular programming, it's @EastVanHalen who's got the frisbes, or is it her kitten Gracie? Let's find out...

"Seeing as how Gracie and I are co-hosting this week, and seeing as how Gracie is as hockey-obsessed as I am (kitten, television, pucks, faaaaascination), I thought I’d bookend my previous Nomeansno selection with one of their alter ego acts, The Hanson Brothers, and their 1992 hockey-themed album “Gross Misconduct.” It was not to be. Do I have a copy? I thought I did, but no. Could I get one? Maybe, if I had realized before Saturday that my copy was missing. Andt all my stalwart punk rawk download blogs came up short.

So I’ve totally pivoted, for no discernible reason, to this weirdo nostalgia album. Weirdo for me, anyhow - who the fuck would think that I’d have unreservedly loved some eight (?) track nonsense recorded in a basement by a bunch of drunken Dayton schoolteachers? But I did, and I probably still do - haven’t had it out for a spin in a few years, we’ll have to see how it fares today. They have a weirdish rep and some weird fans - “I’m not going down to the floor, it’s too…drunk bro,” insisted the nice lady I met in the record label’s box the last time I saw them play - but I thought that the people from Brazil who passed around the mixed drinks they’d smuggled in in half-flattened 2-litre soda bottles were pretty awesome, so I smuggled them into the afterparty."

Right then, download's here, stream's below:

Listen to The Listening Club - 5th November 2023 byThe Listening Club Volume 2 on hearthis.at

See you 20:00 GMT tonight.

Eric Kleptonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13279366242949275787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830631732611553025.post-62126625876347244962023-10-29T10:28:00.000-07:002023-10-29T10:28:58.616-07:00The Listening Club - 29th October 2023
Salutations, folks,

Hope you're all doing good. Still wet as balls here in Amsterdam (wettest October on record apparently, sigh), although we're not complaining too much, even though we got caught out in it last night, it was returning from a beautiful and emotional show from Brian Eno with The Baltic Sea Philharmonic which not surprisingly blew the assembled's socks off and then some, a truly amazing performance.

Last Sunday we had @FaberFedor in the chair, taking people back to two different eras simultaneously (no mean feat, that) with his pick of "Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits" as covered by a raft of American 90s indie and punksters. Can't pretend that Summer's still hanging on here in Amsterdam, the last fizzles of warm weather got blown away on Friday, to be replaced by something a lot wetter and colder. Ah, so it goes. As I mentioned before, time to move indoors, which next week means Negativland and Shellac, and last Friday meant Dexys, who delivered a truly cracking set. Also a little advance notice that it's nearly Le Guess Who time again, which means I'll be looking for someone to run things here around 12th November, and come to think of it, for a few weeks in Jan/Feb, as we head off for a bit of roundtheworldism in the new year, so if anyone wants to help out, let me know. Nothing like advance notice, eh?

Last Sunday we had @ogili in the chair, looking back to futuristic times with his pick of DJ Hatcha's "Dubstep Allstars Vol. 1!, which got the assembled shucking and shuffling fo sho. Nights are starting to draw in a bit here in Amsterdam, and although the temps are still on the warmer side, looks like our extended summer playout is finally coming to an end. Ah well. Just in time for gigging season to properly lift off...

Last Sunday we saw @AqiDraco in the chair, providing some nautical sturm und drang in the shape of "Ayam" by Disillusion, which got the assembled bobbing along very successfully. Thanks to Aqi for the pick, and for sailing the frisb across to @ogili, who's here with the intro...

"As Britain slips further into what appears to be an Alan Moore penned dystopia. I’ve chosen this from 2004, something that could only have come from Britain’s ever mutating multicultural urban culture. Because fuck the cynical adoption of re-heated Powellism by the current government to cover up their corruption and incompetence at their recent party conference, and fuck them. Obviously.

It is an example of a 21st century genre born of the urban sprawl stretching from Peckham, or Brixton southwards to places like Croydon and Bromley. From the time when it was just breaking out to a wider audience from a relatively small scene centered around things like a Croydon record shop, an East London club night, and pirate radio stations like Rinse FM. Back when it felt fresh and exciting to me at least. A genre in its experimental infancy. With melodies traversing through heavy bass like the N109 night bus’s languid passage through the rolling hills, and 1960s Brutalist tower blocks of South London. Where you can hear the musical influence of living in an area bustling with coexisting cultures, alongside the music genres that influenced, or birthed it.

The genre has since escaped the smokey torpor of South London, and became an annoyingly brash beast when it got big in the US. But at the risk of being one of those ‘real’ musical genre bores this is better.
